Tutorial 1: Your First Hex Print

Hex Grid is a painted hex canvas plus a 3D floor preview. You activate cells, tune the grid, and export vase-style G-code. This is a toolpath module — you send G-code to the printer; you do not slice an STL for this workflow.

Step 1: Add Hex Grid

Open the module

From the empty canvas, click the Hex Grid card. The left dock switches to the Hex Grid panel. The main view splits into a 2D canvas (click cells) and a 3D floor preview (live toolpath).


Step 2: Pick a small grid

Set radius, size, perimeters, and layers

In the left dock, set:
- Grid Radius3 (small, fast to print)
- Hex Size20 mm (roughly coaster-sized)
- Perimeters3 (decent wall strength)
- Layers2 (thin panel; raise to 5 for a coaster)

The 2D canvas shows 37 empty hexagons. The 3D floor shows an empty outline near the centre of the bed.


Step 3: Paint a flower

Activate the centre and the six around it

Click cells in the 2D canvas:
1. Click the centre hex — it turns active with a curve through the middle.
2. Click the six hexagons surrounding it — a flower pattern appears.
3. Click the centre a second time if you want double-active (two parallel curves).

Watch the 3D floor as you paint. Hovering a 2D cell highlights its 3D counterpart.

Orbit the preview

Confirm the pattern fits inside the bed outline, curves connect between cells, and double-active cells look like two parallel curves. If the pattern clips the bed, reduce Grid Radius by 1.


Step 5: Export G-code

Export G-Code

Click Export G-Code in the toolbar. Startup, shutdown, speeds, temperatures, and retraction come from the active machine / material / nozzle preset. Pick a save location (desktop) or let the browser download.


Outcome

You have a painted hex motif and a G-code file from the same Print presets used by other modules.
